Internal medicine or general medicine is the medical speciality dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are known as Internists or Physicians. General Physicians who are recognized as experts in diagnosis, prevention and treating acute & chronic diseases handle a broad spectrum of illnesses that affect adults. Their services are not limited to one type of medical problem or organ system. General internists often care for patients all through their adult lives which provide them with an opportunity to establish long and rewarding personal relationships with their patients. When other medical specialists, such as Surgeons or Obstetricians are involved in a specialized treatment regime, they coordinate their patient's care and manage difficult medical problems associated with it.

Internists are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can effectively handle situations where multiple illnesses may strike a patient at the same time. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness (disease prevention and the promotion of health), women's health, substance abuse, mental health, as well as effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs.
